[audio]Bascom Lamar Lunsford-I Wish I Was A Mole In The Ground - Bascom Lamar Lunsford
Recorded in April 1928 in Ashland, Kentucky. Another banjo tune with lyrics that could be from any one of a number of tunes, and which have no apparent logical relationship with each other. This particular tune, which became a folkie staple during the Great Folk Scare, is related to tunes known as "Tempie," "Darling Where Have You Been So Long," "Sammie, Where Have You Been So Long," and "I Don't Like No Railroad Man." In "When We Were Good: The Folk Revival" Robert Cantwell says: "Listen to 'I ...

Recorded on December 21, 1928 in New York City. Hurt said, when asked about this sweet murder ballad, that he "made it up from hearing people talk. He was a great man, I know that, and he was killed by two men named Bob and Louis. I got enough of the story to write me a song."

[audio]Durium Hit of the week - Hans Koert
During the late 1920s a few advertisement boys in New York City launch a new idea. An idea that still looks modern in 2004. Every week, on Tuesday, a new Hit of the week was sold in the newspaper stands of the city. For US $ 0.15, twenty percent of the price of an ordinary shellac record, you got a light flexible card board record, playable on one side, but thanks to the so-called "micro-grooves", with twice the playing time of an ordinary record...

[audio]Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra - 1925 - Doc Murph's Paul Whiteman and His Orchestra
The Victor Talking Machine Company began using the Western Electric Hi Fidelity Sound System commercially in early 1925. Paul Whiteman, Victor's premier popular orchestra, began recording with the microphone on May 5, 1925. Herein are 10 representitive recordings from mid 1925 that demonstrate the Whiteman sound in its full "Orthophonic" glory. I have used some audio restoration software to enhance the listening experience of these recordings which were made more than 85 years ago...

[audio]Isham Jones - 12 unedited WAVs - some rare
This file includes 12 unedited WAV transfers from my new 78 RPM collection. They are all Acoustic recordings made by Isham Jones and his orchestra in the early 1920s. Some, such as "Who's Sorry Now", should be well-known to people familiar with the artist. Others, such "'Neath Egyptian skies," probably will not. I personally have never found any digital recordings of this and other songs any where on the internet...

[audio]Charlie Poole & The North Carolina Ramblers-Shootin' Creek - Charlie Poole & The North Carolina Ramblers
Reorded on July 23, 1928. This tune is clearly related, if not the same tune, to the old-timey and bluegrass standard "Cripple Creek." Alan Jabbour has speculated that the "Cripple Creek" title may be related to certain labor disputes in the Cripple Creek area of Colorado during 1903 and 1904. On the other hand, a Cripple Creek flows through Grayson and Carroll Counties in Southwest Virginia. As for the title "Shootin' Creek," there exists a Shooting Creek region in Franklin County also in South...

[audio]Bertha Lee w. Charley Patton-Mind Reader Blues - Bertha Lee w. Charley Patton
Recorded on January 31, 1934 in New York City. This tune, along with "Yellow Bee," was recorded at Patton's last recording session. He died two months later. Bertha Lee was Patton's common-law wife at the time. Lee appears to be lecturing Patton, who was an inveterate womanizer, with her sultry voice. In the fourth verse Lee sings: "I remember a day when I were livin' at Lula town, I remember a day when I were livin' at Lula town, my man did so many wrong things 'til I had to leave the town." Le...

A mere six years later, as leader of his own dance band, the "Novelty Orchestra," Selvin released the biggest-selling popular song in the first quarter-century of recorded music...
